Happy St. Patrick 's Day! 🍀 Yesterday we went the Baker 6th, 7th and 8th grade performance of Mulan. Today we are going to start writing opinion pieces on our favorite character from the show. Today we got into groups and worked on posters about the seven continents. Each group became an expert on a continent. We will present our posters and take two column notes next week!

Between field trips, snow days and everything in between, we have been BUSY! We made adjective people to help us understand that adjectives are describing words. On Monday, we went to the Museum of Science to look at examples of motion. Students completed scavenger hunts and saw a forces and motion presentation. Below are some pictures of our trip. Some chaperones sent pictures from their day. If you have any good ones, send them to Ms. Curran! In CCT we practiced our critical thinking skills and following directions. We made finger people using details given to us by Ms. P. Then we talked to members of our group and compared our finger people. After, students added details, color and names. They created a story about a mystery favorite finger person and had others try and guess their answer. In math we started talk about the relationship between addition and subtraction. We used Cuisinaire Rods as a manipulative to bridge the relationship and write addition and subtraction sentences. Tomorrow we will look at fact families a little more closely.
Welcome to March! We have so many things happening in 2C right now! We finished our fraction ice cream cones. Next we are going to look at finishing up our fraction unit with comparing whole numbers to half, doubling numbers and taking a closer look at other fractions like 1/12. In science, we experimented with different materials around the room and made a scientific claim. We backed up our claim using the evidence found from the experiments. During CCT, we used critical thinking skills to put items in order. We thought about categories and what items we could add that would make sense.
Today we reviewed one half and represented the fraction with a fun ice cream cone project. After, we learned a new game called Roll, Slide, and Cover. Students practiced finding different fractions on a game board.
Yesterday we continued reading a Cam Jansen book as we worked on elements of a story. After break, students will work on reading their own mystery books and summarizing their books. In CCT with Ms. P., we graduated from creative thinking and started focusing on critical thinking. We did an activity called busy bob where we learned how our brains critically adjust to situations. When we think critically, it has to make sense.
Happy Valentine's Day from 2C! Our day in photos: Decorating Valentine bags. Valentine math activities with conversation hearts.
It's hard to believe 100 days have flown by us in second grade. We celebrated by showcasing our 100th Day projects and switching classrooms for super fun activities. Just to name a few:
Happy Friday! Even with only a three day week, we managed to squeeze in a lot of learning! We continued our study of motion and began reading Forces Make Things Move by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. We took some two-column notes and discussed friction and gravity. We will finish the book next week. During CCT with Ms. P, we learned a lot about flexible thinking and what happens when we start with one planned idea and then other ideas change those plans. We used play-doh to create something. Then students added on one idea to their classmates idea. The results were awesome. 2C did a great job being flexible and encouraging towards each other. We also started learning about fractions. We talked about ways to show one half. Next week we will talk about thirds and fourths. We have some great games to help practice fractions and a fun ice cream cone project coming up. In writing, we will continue writing opinions and finishing up our cinquaine poems!
Have a great (snowy) weekend! Welcome to February in second grade! We were busy last week getting our opinion writing done and hung up in the hallway. We also worked on a Hopi pueblo project. We plan on finishing up Hopi this week with a fun game of Hopi Jeopardy to test our knowledge of what we learned during the unit.
It's been a busy month here in 2C. We have started learning a number of new topics in second grade and we have enjoyed January very much. I'm looking forward to getting back to a regular blogging schedule. Let's take a look at what second grade has been up to! Creative and Critical ThinkingAs part of the second grade Enrichment Curriculum, Ms. P has been coming in each week for CCT (Creative and Critical Thinking. The program gives opportunities for students to extend their brains using creative strategies and critical strategies. They practice being flexible and thinking outside the box. We are LOVING our time with Ms. P! MoneyWe started learning about U.S. money in math! Here, we are learning a game called Trade to 25 cents/50 cents/100 cents. All you need is a number cube and some coins. Super fun and a great way to practice addition. Groundhog DayGroundhog Day is quickly approaching and as an introduction to opinion writing, students are working on their final drafts. Students had to come up with ideas to back up their opinion of why they want/don't want the Groundhog to see his shadow. We read some books about the fun holiday and made these groundhogs shown above out of construction paper and glue. In Library we celebrated this year's Caldecott winners and honorary winners. Students checked out some past Caldecott winner and honorary winner books and then listened to three stories. Introduction to MotionIn science, we looked at how force makes things move. We thought about the difference between push and pull and experimented with different materials like ramps, feathers, bouncey balls, cars, cubes, weighted cylinders, marbles, toy cars, string and more! Students wrote their observations in their journals. We will continue looking at force and motion into February and March. Be on the lookout for our experiments with gravity, friction and what things can cause motion.
That's all for now! See you on Monday! |
