Today we practice math by myself. We are building our stamina to work independently in math. We played a game called Roll A Ten. As a challenge, students tried Roll A Twenty.

Today we read the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind a true story about a young boy from Malawi who helped his village access clean drinking water through wind power. This book shows students that sometimes we have big dreams and although people may tell us we'll never succeed, the only thing we can do is try our best. We wrote about what our hopes and dreams are for second grade this year and set goals for ourselves. We will check in with our goals throughout the school year to see how we are progressing. This activity is a part of the work 2C students are doing to understand perseverance and growth mindset. This week we have read many books that will inspire students to pursue their dreams, try things that are new and sometimes hard or scary. Whenever we try new things, we are helping our brains stretch and grow! We talked about having a positive attitude (growth brain) vs. a negative attitude (fixed brain) and sorted common phrases we say into those categories. We are going to try and keep a growth mindset brain this year in 2C!
Today we began the process of learning how to write a four part sentence. We use sentence frames to help add the "who/what?" and "did what?" to our sentences. As we master this skill, we will add on the "where?" and the "when?" Earlier today we made a birthday graph and interpreted the information using our math journals.
Welcome back! Baker School is back at it once again. We had a great first two days of school! We drew self portraits, played an activity called "find a friend" and read a book called Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. After reading the book with Ms. Sayah, 2C students made a magic pebble and wrote what they would wish for. 2C also wrote about what they were terrific at on the first day of school. This is an activity that Ms. Curran's class writes every year. We love keeping traditions
