We have had such a busy week here in 2C, finishing up projects, units and of course enjoying our hard earned pj party! Here are some photos from today's extravaganza: In social studies, we learned about Hopi weaving. Students were given their own looms and tried weaving with yarn. In math we continued learning about graphing. We also started our 2015 calendar project. In literacy/writing we finished up our winter sensory poetry and finished literacy center activities. Students read a TFK about Mars, practiced looking for non-fiction text features from books in our library, and worked on alphabetizing winter words. Coming up: Word study will not be given next week due to the short week. There will be no homework next week due to the short week. Important Information/FYI

Today 2C completed collage art to go with their poems about winter activities. We hope to have the finished product up by next week!
Students looked at pictures of their play dough creations and discussed their thinking. Adding on and elaboration were the key ideas in the recap. Then students then received a picture of a tree and they were asked to add their own original ideas.
It's official! 2C earned $25 in their bank and we are ready to cash in for a special pajama party this Friday. Details are in the e-mail!
We watched The Magic School Bus For Lunch at the end of the day as a wrap up before our nutrition/digestion review and assessment. You can watch the episode again from the link below:
2C created a picture graph of birthdays in the classroom. Students interpreted the data and discussed what they noticed.
Happy Friday 2C families! We had another exciting week in school with a lot of fun activities. In science we read All About Your Tongue and students participated in a taste test with salty, sweet, sour and bitter. We tasted Fritos, sugar cubes, bittersweet chocolate and lemons. Students recorded their observations in their science notebook. In social studies we read Corn is Maize by Aliki. Corn means grain and the Native Americans used corn for many things. For homework, second graders colored in corn husks and we added a cornfield to our back bulletin board. In Literacy we continued working on story elements and discussed setting, plot and main characters. During snack time we began reading Matilda by Roald Dahl. During writing we talked about poetry structure, stanzas and rhythm. In Math we worked on a place value review pack and students corrected their own work by using answer sheets hung up in the classroom. Some students did not finish and will work on them next week. Coming up: Math: Introduction to graphing. Picture graphs, bar graphs and line graphs. We will also start an introduction to time and do a fun project to help get ready for 2015. Literacy/Writing: We will start editing and publishing our winter poetry. We will wrap up our guided reading books and discussions on story elements before break. Science: Carrot test and exploring teeth. Esophagus and lower intestine experiment. Wrap up Nutrition and Digestion. Social Studies: Read Corn is My Life and intro to Hopi weaving. Enjoy your weekend! 2C students used creative and flexible thinking to make play dough creations. Each student started with a color and then had to slide their creation around the table and each student added their own details to other's creations. We added a new activity tour math stations called "what's in the bag?". Partners take turns choosing a number of base 10 blocks and then add their 2 or 3 digit numbers together. Today we practiced adding using the 10's and 1's strategy.
