Thank you to all of the families who donated goods to the second grade 100th day of school celebration. We had a great time. Here are some snapshots from Wednesday:
Welcome back from February vacation! I hope you all had a nice week off. Can you believe we made it through a week of school with no snow days? :) Thank you to all of the families who donated goods to the second grade 100th day of school celebration. We had a great time. Here are some snapshots from Wednesday: In math, we finished up Time and began a fraction review. In science we read A Log's Life by Wendy Pfeffer and recorded observational drawings in our science notebooks. We also explored how ramps work using a variety of materials and objects. We read Forces Make Things Move by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. In Literacy, we practiced finding evidence within the text to support student's ideas and thinking. We read Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto and A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon.

These Friday posts are starting to feel a little repetitive....three day school weeks, more snow, and now February Vacation is upon us! Luckily the students (and teachers :) ) are still in good spirits as we try and finish up work before another stretch of no school. Here is a short recap of some activities we did this week. Students completed a Valentine Math activity using a box of conversation hearts. They estimated, counted, sorted, added, subtracted, compared, and graphed their candy hearts. We made Valentine bags on Thursday for our Valentine's Day celebration today. Our Valentine exchange today. Hopi Jeopardy, a game we use to help test students on what they learned about the Hopi people. Some examples of our 100th day projects. 100th day will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 25th (as long as we don't have any more snow days!) Ms. P came in for another CCT lesson called the Finger Puppet lesson. Students followed a series of directions to illustrate, elaborate, and make decisions on their finger puppet drawings. The activity will be completed the week we get back from vacation. Ms. P did leave us a note before she left: I hope you all enjoy your break! Whether you are going somewhere warm, going somewhere snowy or just staying here, be safe and have fun! We will see you on the 23rd!
Enjoy the weekend! Happy Valentine's Day! Happy Vacation!! Well, the weather has been crazy! Once again, we had a three-day school week. Here are some highlights from our short week, yet eventful week. Our rotting log survived the storm and arrived to our classroom yesterday. Students met in groups to do an initial observation of the log and some creatures living inside. Ms. Curran was very "brave" and dug around to find the millipede that was hiding under some moss. The sounds in the classroom varied from "That's awesome!" to "Eeewww" and "Yuck." The rotting log will be part of our science curriculum for the rest of the school year as students observe change over time. 2C students began learning about personal narratives. We read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst to show a how a story is written in the first person. We also read The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey. While this book is not a personal narrative, the story is a great example of story sequence and structure. Students learned about the structure of a personal narrative (beginning, middle, and end or first, second, third, last.)
Coming Up:
Math: Continuing Time (time to the minute and time vocabulary: quarter past, half past etc.) Valentine math estimation with sweetheart candies. Literacy: Finding supportive evidence within fictional texts. Social Studies: Wrapping up Hopi Science: Motion and Rotting Log observations Writing: Personal Narratives, Heart of my Writing activity. FYI/Important Info: 100th Day of School Projects are due no later than Wednesday, February 11th. Valentine's Day will be celebrated in school on Friday, February 13th. February Vacation begins on Monday, February 16th-Friday February 20th. We will return to school on Monday, February 23rd. Enjoy what looks to be ANOTHER snowy weekend! |
