Happy April Vacation everyone! It's hard to believe it, but I think we officially made it to warmer weather! I hope you all enjoy your time away from school. Whether it's a stay-cation or you are traveling to far off places, enjoy and safe travels. Please enjoy some of the highlights from this week. We presented our reader's theatre plays to Mrs. Bates' first grade class. Thank you Ms. McNeil for your hard work. We loved having you! We learned about Ghanaian instruments like the talking drum and the shekere. We listened to some songs and read The Royal Drum an Ashanti tale retold by Mary Dixon Lake. We also learned about many Ghanaian games: The Black Stars (official soccer team), drop peter drop (like duck duck goose), shakey shakey, Achi (like tic tac toe) and Wari (mancala.) We made our own Wari boards. We went to see some familiar faces perform in Carnival of the Animals, a delightful show put on by the Baker kindergarteners. Early Release Days: April 7th, 15th, 28th, May 6th. *Dismissal is at 12:40. *please note that we will be eating lunch in our classroom due to the short day. School lunch will be available.

We were busy once again in 2C this week. There's just one more week until April Vacation and we still have lots to do before then. Check out some highlights from our week. Our adjective kids are hanging up in our classroom. In math we continued using the stacking method for addition and subtraction. We used place value mats to reinforce adding and subtracting in the ones and tens column. We also did some more work on story problems. We started our Ghana Reading groups. All students work in groups are read four books: Anansi the Spider, Anansi and the Talking Melon, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears, and Ghana: Countries of the World. Students completed activities with each book. We will continue these activities next week. The above picture is our spider web we have been creating after reading Anansi the Spider. In computer, students watched a video: Georgina Williams: A Girl from Ghana. Students learned about daily life in Akrapong, a city close to the capital. They answered questions and compared their life to Georgina's life. The video can be found on the Baker School website under second grade research links. Earlier in the week, we read Nii Kwei's Day a story about a boy from Accra, the capital city. Students also compared their lives to Nii Kwei's life in Ghana. We learned about Kente cloth, a traditional form of weaving in Ghana. We read Kente Colors by Debbie Chocolate and Kofi and His Magic by Maya Angelou. We watched a video of a Ghanaian boy weaving on a loom and then we began creating our own Kente cloth with stencils and sharpie markers. The video of kente weaving can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06_o6MdgdWc. We had special visitors come in to read a story to the class! Thank you so much to the Chandrashekar family for coming in! 2C loved the stories!

We took a break from some of our routines to fit in some extra activities. Today in computers we used the Forces in Action activity from this website: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/forcesinaction.html. This site can be found on the baker school website. We experimented with ramps, weights, and parachutes. In science we read I fall Down by Vicki Cobb and discussed the force that pulls things to the earth, gravity. We experimented with gravity by having dropping races. Students dropped items of different size and weight. They concluded that no matter the side or weight, each item would drop to the ground at the same time. We dove head first into our study of Ghana and learned about the flag, Ghanaian names and Ghanaian folktales. Our flag projects are hanging in our hallway. We read Anansi Goes Fishing retold by Eric A. Himmel, an Ashanti trickster tale from Ghana. We practiced story sequencing in preparation for our Ghana Reading Groups next week. 2C did an amazing job putting the story back together. In Literacy we also learned about adjectives and wrote adjectives about ourselves. The projects are almost done and will be up soon. In math we practiced our jumping number line strategy for addition and subtraction. We also started practicing solving and showing work for story problems. 2C made a list of steps to help them solve story problems.
