Today we read the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind a true story about a young boy from Malawi who helped his village access clean drinking water through wind power. This book shows students that sometimes we have big dreams and although people may tell us we'll never succeed, the only thing we can do is try our best. We wrote about what our hopes and dreams are for second grade this year and set goals for ourselves. We will check in with our goals throughout the school year to see how we are progressing. This activity is a part of the work 2C students are doing to understand perseverance and growth mindset. This week we have read many books that will inspire students to pursue their dreams, try things that are new and sometimes hard or scary. Whenever we try new things, we are helping our brains stretch and grow! We talked about having a positive attitude (growth brain) vs. a negative attitude (fixed brain) and sorted common phrases we say into those categories. We are going to try and keep a growth mindset brain this year in 2C!

Today we began the process of learning how to write a four part sentence. We use sentence frames to help add the "who/what?" and "did what?" to our sentences. As we master this skill, we will add on the "where?" and the "when?" Earlier today we made a birthday graph and interpreted the information using our math journals.
Welcome back! Baker School is back at it once again. We had a great first two days of school! We drew self portraits, played an activity called "find a friend" and read a book called Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. After reading the book with Ms. Sayah, 2C students made a magic pebble and wrote what they would wish for. 2C also wrote about what they were terrific at on the first day of school. This is an activity that Ms. Curran's class writes every year. We love keeping traditions
Happy June everyone! We have been learning a lot about animals and a lot about Japan these last couple of weeks. Students have been busy working on their animal research reports. On Wednesday, we went on a field trip to The Franklin Park Zoo! It was an awesome day and we got to hear the lion roar! We have been practicing telling time on the analog clock and played an activity called "Time Around The Room." Students had an answer sheet and read all different clocks around the room. We also have been learning more about Japan. Today, we learned about kimonos and designed our own. We made Japanese Flags and read Eliza's Cherry Trees, a story about Eliza Scidmore, who helped get the beautiful cherry blossom trees from Japan planted in Washington D.C. Franklin Park ZooTelling TimeKimonosWe started learning about Japan in 2C! We looked at books and made posters using facts we learned about this interesting country. Today we learned about Japan's geography and made an interactive map on our bulletin board.
Last week we had Genki Spark come to second grade to play and teach us about taiko drumming. It was amazing! This week students in 2C made Wari Boards out of egg cartons. Wari is a game children in Ghana play. It is very similar to Mancala. Children in Ghana use seeds or beans to play. We used dried lima beans and paint to create our game boards.
A couple of weeks ago, second grade students in ALL five classes earned enough stickers for an epic Going to Ghana Plane Party! Take a look at some of the pictures from our exciting adventure.
This week we continued our geometry unit. We looked a little more closely at symmetry. We started the beginning of an art project that will showcase our understanding of symmetry, 2D and 3D shapes. Stay tuned for the completed city skyline! Today we looked at 3D shapes and did a 3D scavenger hunt aroud the classroom!
Today we worked in stations and took a closer look at the rotting logs in each of the second grade classrooms. We also looked at pictures that students took from our last observation.
Yesterday we looked at the question: What causes a push or a pull? Students used different materials to show how different objects or environmental factors can cause movement. Last week, we also started taking a closer look at the rotting log with the help of Ms. P. We observed rotting logs outside of our classroom and came up with questions and theories as to how the tree became a rotting log. Students also took ipads to take pictures of their observations. We will be looking more closely at these photos on Thursday. In math, we began working on story problems and we practiced some new math strategies for solving double digit addition and subtraction We also saw kindergarten perform Carnival of the Animals. It was great to see the show and support our fellow students.
