It's been a busy month here in 2C. We have started learning a number of new topics in second grade and we have enjoyed January very much. I'm looking forward to getting back to a regular blogging schedule. Let's take a look at what second grade has been up to! Creative and Critical ThinkingAs part of the second grade Enrichment Curriculum, Ms. P has been coming in each week for CCT (Creative and Critical Thinking. The program gives opportunities for students to extend their brains using creative strategies and critical strategies. They practice being flexible and thinking outside the box. We are LOVING our time with Ms. P! MoneyWe started learning about U.S. money in math! Here, we are learning a game called Trade to 25 cents/50 cents/100 cents. All you need is a number cube and some coins. Super fun and a great way to practice addition. Groundhog DayGroundhog Day is quickly approaching and as an introduction to opinion writing, students are working on their final drafts. Students had to come up with ideas to back up their opinion of why they want/don't want the Groundhog to see his shadow. We read some books about the fun holiday and made these groundhogs shown above out of construction paper and glue. In Library we celebrated this year's Caldecott winners and honorary winners. Students checked out some past Caldecott winner and honorary winner books and then listened to three stories. Introduction to MotionIn science, we looked at how force makes things move. We thought about the difference between push and pull and experimented with different materials like ramps, feathers, bouncey balls, cars, cubes, weighted cylinders, marbles, toy cars, string and more! Students wrote their observations in their journals. We will continue looking at force and motion into February and March. Be on the lookout for our experiments with gravity, friction and what things can cause motion.
That's all for now! See you on Monday!
