Welcome back students! I hope everyone had a nice vacation. We got right back to business as usual in the classroom. Lots of projects have started and finished this week. Let's take a look. We made New Years resolutions and wrote them down on flip books. We decorated party hats too. Be sure to check them out just outside of our classroom. I will post a picture on Twitter as well. In Spanish class we practiced numbers using a mystery coloring activity. This week we learned about Hopi symbols. We wrote stories and made our own replicas of Hopi symbols using colored corn kernels. The symbol stories will be on display in our classroom, so make sure you come and check them out. In math, we continued our learning with place value and addition. We played place value mat addition to help us understand how place value can be used as a strategy for solving mathmatical equations.

This morning second graders participated in some fun winter activities! In Ms. Racine's class, students mad penguins with Ms. Racine and Ms.Naseck. They played Roll-a-Snowman with Ms. Brandl and they made Ugly Holiday Sweaters with Ms. Curran.
Today Ms. Otero came in to help us make toolboxes for Zones of Regulation. When we are feeling sad, silly, upset or excited, we can use the tragedies in our "toolbox" to help us get into a good space for learning. In social studies, we took a closer look at Arizona, where the Hopi people live. We looked at a map and found the Colorado River, the capital city Phoenix, and neighboring states and countries.
This week we have been working on sensory poetry. Previously, we popped some popcorn in our classroom and used our five senses to describe the popcorn. We used adjectives and practiced thinking about how describing words can help us elaborate in writing. We used Microsoft Word to type our poems and played around with font, size and color. Our published work is on display in the hallway so come check it out! In Social Studies, we started learning about Arizona, the state where the Hopi Native American Tribe lives. We practiced a guided imagery exercise and used colored pencils to draw what we pictured in our minds. There were photographs to help with some of the new vocabulary words, like Mesa, wispy clouds, gila woodpecker and road runner. We also looked at the Paloverde tree and thought about how it is different than the trees we have here in Massachusetts. Our guided imagery is on display in our hallway, so if you are in the area, come check it out! In math, we are starting a mini project in honor of the end of another calendar year. 2C students will make a calendar for 2017. It's a great way to help them practice their calendar skills. Be on the lookout for some fun photos next week. :)
Today we learned about the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. We made our own Saguaro Cactuses. We also wrote about what we learned. .
Today, 2C students shared their landform posters with the class. Audience members took notes on the landforms using our 2 column notes organizer. Next we will focus our learning on the desert and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona.
Yesterday Ms. Otero came into 2C to work on Zones of Regulation. We played a BINGO game where students had to identify feelings. Next up, we will learn some strategies that will help us when we need to get back into a positive learning space.
I'd like to give another BIG thank you to the families for making our annual second grade feast so spectacular! I hope you have a wonderful holiday and we'll see you on Monday! Enjoy some of these photos, I 'll have more up next week.
